Krewe Call

It’s okay to feel what you feel!

The daily feelings check-in from The Krewelings | The Krewe of Feelings™

Krewe Call is a four-beat daily emotional check-in for children in PreK through 2nd grade: name the feeling, size the feeling, try one tool, and return to the day. It takes about three minutes, needs no special training, and works because it repeats.

What Krewe Call is for

Young children feel things long before they can say them. A four-year-old who bites at the sand table is not usually being defiant — the feeling arrived faster than the words. Krewe Call gives that child the words, in the same order, every single day, until reaching for them becomes automatic.

It is a routine, not a lesson. Nobody has to share. Pointing counts. Silence counts.

The four beats

  1. Name it. Which feeling is here right now? A child points, says a name, or thinks it quietly. There are no wrong answers.
  2. Size it. Is this a tiny feeling or a giant one? The same feeling at two sizes needs two different responses — and children can almost always tell you the size before they can tell you the name.
  3. Tool it. Try one thing, together. One. Not a menu, not a lecture — a single small action that gives the feeling somewhere to go.
  4. Return. Come back to the day with a clear signal. Acknowledge the effort, not the "right" feeling.

The three-minute version is the one that actually builds regulation, because it is the one that survives a real week. Done is better than perfect — especially on a Monday.

Why it works

Not because it is clever. Because it repeats.

Children — particularly children who have lived through stress or upheaval — build safety through predictability. A check-in that happens every single morning becomes a regulation tool all by itself, before anyone opens anything. A three-minute check-in every day builds more regulation than a perfect ten-minute lesson once a week. Consistency is the tool.

The long form: Krewe Call in a calm corner

The four beats scale. At the carpet, Krewe Call is four steps and three minutes. In a calm corner, the middle stretches out into six: name it, size it, move to the corner, flip the timer, try a tool, return to class. Same routine, more room. A child who has done Krewe Call at the carpet already knows what to do when they get to the corner — which is the entire point of running it daily when nothing is wrong.

Where the name comes from

A krewe is a Mardi Gras word. It means the group you belong to — the one where everybody has a place, everybody has a role, and nobody sits the parade out. That is also a reasonable description of a good classroom.

Krewe Call is the roll call for feelings. Everyone is counted. Everyone gets to answer.

What you need to run it

Nothing. You can run Krewe Call tomorrow with your own voice and no materials at all.

What the Krewelings materials add is the vocabulary: twenty characters who each carry one feeling, so a child can say "I feel like Cubby today" instead of melting down — plus the size scale, the coping tools, and the classroom routines that make the four beats concrete.

Common questions

Is Krewe Call a curriculum?

No. It is a daily routine — four beats you can run in three minutes. The curriculum is what you build on top of it.

What age is Krewe Call for?

PreK through 2nd grade is where it fits most naturally. It works at home with the same ages.

What if a child will not participate?

Observation is participation for a child who isn’t ready yet. Consistent refusal may be worth investigating further.

What if a child picks a hard feeling every day?

That is information, not a problem. It is the routine doing exactly what it exists to do.

Does Krewe Call replace discipline?

No. It gives children the vocabulary to understand a feeling before the behaviour becomes the issue.
